Origins and History of Sakai Matsuri
Sakai Matsuri began in 1974.
It is said to have begun as a substitute event during a period when the Ouo Yoichi night market was temporarily suspended.
Current official information also presents the view that the festival’s origins can be traced to the Sumiyoshi Festival Folding Screen from about 400 years ago, linking Sakai’s old festival traditions with a modern community event.
