Shonai Kagura, passed down in the Shonai area of Yufu City, is a traditional performing art carried on by two schools and multiple kagura troupes. Enjoy powerful drum-and-flute music and vigorous, humorous dances.

About Shonai Kagura

Shonai Kagura is the collective name for forms of kagura passed down in the Shonai area of Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, and is designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Yufu City.

There are two schools, the Shonai-area school and the Asono-area school, and multiple kagura troupes perform at local festivals and events, passing on the dances.

An important part of Shonai Kagura's background is that it was dedicated at shrines to pray for the five grains to flourish and to express gratitude for a good harvest.

Origins and History of Shonai Kagura

Records show that in 1778, during the Yasunaga era, groups of shrine priests performed kagura in the Shonai area.

Its present form dates back to the early Meiji period, when kagura dance groups made up of parishioners and others are said to have been organized, based on kagura passed down from the birthplace of Bungo Kagura.

Later, kagura troupes were formed in various parts of the area. The Shonai Kagura Festival began in 1981, following the Shonai Furusato Festival, and Shonai Kagura was designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Yufu City in 2007.
