At the Ryukyu Kaiensai, music and fireworks ring out together in springtime Okinawa. Against the backdrop of Ginowan’s seaside, about 10,000 fireworks light up the night sky with an early taste of summer.
About Ryukyu Kaiensai
The Ryukyu Kaiensai is a music-and-fireworks event held every April in Ginowan City, Okinawa Prefecture.
About 10,000 fireworks synchronized with music herald summer’s early arrival in Okinawa in spring.
Held to coincide with the start of the beach season, it paints a night-sky scene of “the earliest summer in Japan.”

Festival highlights
The highlight is a display combining music and fireworks that lasts about 1 hour.
The event features designed fireworks based on Junko Koshino’s sketches, as well as artistic fireworks that portray Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji through light and sound.
The precise control that assigns a type of firework to each musical note is another unique feature.
