Origins and History of Kakegawa Festival
The present-day style of the Kakegawa Festival is said to have taken shape between the mid-Edo period and the Meiji period.
The oldest known festival document dates back approximately 260 years, and it is estimated that the festival had largely assumed its present-day style by the mid-Meiji period.
Kakegawa’s history as a castle town and post town along the Tokaido, where people and cultures came and went, has also contributed to the variety of its dashi and performances.
