Imatsu Tondo is a traditional event in Imatsu, Okinoshima Town, where New Year decorations are burned by the sea and the large bamboo pole that falls into the water is retrieved.

About Imatsu Tondo

Imatsu Tondo is a fire festival held during Little New Year in Imatsu, Okinoshima Town.

A large bamboo pole is erected on the shore, and New Year decorations and other items are burned to pray for good harvests and plentiful catches.

In Imatsu, this is observed as a daring local custom passed down through generations: bamboo is lavishly decorated, set alight, toppled into the sea, and then retrieved.

Festival highlights

A highlight is the large bamboo pole, made by joining horizontal bamboo poles and decorated with bags called saifu and streamers.

A fire is lit in a structure piled with New Year decorations, and young men wait for the bamboo to fall into the sea before diving in.

The burning bamboo and its retrieval from the sea are part of one continuous sequence, making this a distinctive feature of Imatsu Tondo.
