Origins and History of Shinmei Fireworks Festival
The Shinmei Fireworks are said to have originated as fireworks honoring Jinzaemon, who contributed to the development of Ichikawa washi paper.
The tradition of “Ichikawa fireworks” is said to have begun when fireworks using signal-fire techniques developed in the Ichikawa-Daimon area during the Warring States period were launched on Jinzaemon’s memorial day.
During the Edo period, the tradition developed into launched fireworks. After it came to a halt, it was revived in 1989 as the Shinmei Fireworks Festival.
