Origins and History of Yoshida Fire Festival

The Yoshida Fire Festival was originally a festival of Suwa Shrine. The Kai Kokushi records that bonfires were lit throughout the town for the annual festival of Suwa Myojin in Kamiyoshida Village.

The 1572 Yoshida no Shinjuku-chō records a route taken by the mikoshi, suggesting that the festival was held more than 400 years ago.

The festival dates changed from the lunar calendar’s July 21 to August 26 and the 27th on the Gregorian calendar, and were fixed to the current dates.
