About Fujinomiya Autumn Festival
Fujinomiya Matsuri is an autumn festival in Fujinomiya City held in conjunction with the autumn reisai of Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha.
neighborhoods pull dashi and yatai through the streets while playing Fujinomiya hayashi, designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Shizuoka Prefecture.
The event brings together local religious festivities and gratitude for the harvest made possible by Mount Fuji’s blessings.
It has been known by its current name, “Fujinomiya Matsuri,” since 2011.
Festival highlights
One highlight is seeing dashi and yatai gather around Sengen Taisha Shrine for simultaneous Fujinomiya-bayashi performances and group dances.
In the latter part of the festival, dashi and yatai processions take place, along with musical contests where groups compete in their performances.
The festival is distinctive for bringing together the shrine’s annual festival and local performing arts, as dashi and yatai from each district move through the city center.

Origins and History of Fujinomiya Autumn Festival
It is said that rites of gratitude for the harvest have been held at Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine since the shrine was enshrined in 806.
There are few records of the tsuke-matsuri held by the shrine parishioner districts, but an 1860 diary says, “Many festival floats were brought out,” suggesting that the custom of bringing out dashi already existed around that time.
During the Meiji period, the Omiya Youth Group worked to develop the festival. Fujinomiya-bayashi was designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Shizuoka Prefecture in 1995.
