Origins and History of Miyazaki Jingu Grand Festival

The festival is said to have originated when townspeople who worshipped at Miyazaki Jingu submitted a petition asking for an annual shinkō procession from the distant shrine.

Records of the shinkō festival date back to 1876, and a new hōren palanquin was made in 1909, establishing the procession format seen today.

The festival resumed after the war, and from 1971, the schedule of a main shrine festival followed by shinkō processions on Saturday and Sunday became established.
