Ichiki Tanabata Odori is a traditional dance passed down in the Osato area of Ichikikushikino, Kagoshima Prefecture.

Centered on Odori, local people have carried on the tradition by taking on different roles.

Designated a nationally Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, it is a Tanabata event that also appears to have served as a pre-festival for and as a way to honor the spirits of the departed.

Festival highlights

A major feature in the past was a procession of large papier-mâché figures of deer, tigers, oxen, and cranes, followed by performers representing a Ryukyu king and daimyo, a naginata procession, and then Taiko Odori.

Today, offerings center on Taiko Odori.

The sounds of drums and kane bells, dancers wearing flower hats, and dances set to old-fashioned lyrics evoke the performing arts preserved by the community.

What to expect

The performing art has developed by combining a procession with hon-odori, the main dance.

Following the dances and procession elements, Taiko Odori takes center stage, featuring drums, kane bells, iritsuzumi hand drums, and hira-daiko flat drums. Young adults and children each perform their respective roles.

Today, it is carried on as an offering centered on Taiko Odori.

Origins and History of Ichiki Tanabata Odori

One tradition says it began as a performing art to celebrate Shimazu Yoshihiro’s triumphant return from the invasion of Korea.

Another tradition says that the dance was performed to console the spirit of Tokonami Toju, who was involved in developing the rice paddies in Osato.

The city’s information explains that the dance was revived in commemoration of the completion of an irrigation canal and the development of Osato’s rice paddies in 1684, and has continued for about 300 years.
