Origins and History of Himi Gion Festival
The festival is said to have originated when the Gion deity was welcomed in a prayer to drive away a plague during an epidemic in Himi around the middle of the Edo period or the Shotoku era.
Records relating to the hikiyama include an old document about the festival in 1679 and a record of a figure said to have been made in 1799.
The number of hikiyama has changed because of major fires in the Meiji and Showa eras and deterioration over time; 5 now take part in the procession.
