Origins and History of Gassan Shrine Mikoshi Procession

Gassan Shrine is said to have been founded in Oei 22 by Ogasawara Shinano no Kami Fuyuhiro, lord of Masuda Castle, who invited and enshrined the spirit of Mount Gassan, one of the Three Mountains of Dewa, here.

From Keicho 7 onward, the Satake clan revered the shrine, and the Satake lord's name was also inscribed on the ridge tags from renovations to the shrine buildings.

After the Meiji period, the shrine's official rank changed several times, and it became a village shrine in Showa 17.
