About Fukai Danjiri Festival

The Fukai Danjiri Festival is an autumn festival of Nonomiya Shrine held around Fukai in Naka Ward, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture.

Neighborhood associations in the Fukai area bring out their danjiri, process through the area, and make a shrine visit.

Eight towns, divided into the Eastern Union and Western Union, take part in processions throughout the day and night and in a union parade.

This event offers a chance to experience the bonds between neighborhoods and festival culture through the danjiri.

Festival highlights

The main highlight is the yarimawashi, in which a moving danjiri makes a right-angle turn.

In Fukai, yarimawashi also takes place during the nighttime lantern-lit procession, as danjiri adorned with lanterns make their way through the streets.

During the Eight-Town Union Parade around Fukai Station, a notable moment is when the procession turns right at the bottom of the slope in front of the station.

The distinct carvings on each danjiri and the music played on drums, gongs, and flutes are also worth seeing.

What to expect

For the festival, the danjiri from each town are brought out of their sheds early in the morning, followed by preparations and prayers for a safe procession.

The first day is called the eve festival and the second day the main festival; the danjiri process through the Fukai area before making a shrine visit to Nonomiya Shrine.

At night, danjiri adorned with lanterns take part in a lantern-lit procession, and union parades are held near the station and elsewhere.

At the end of the festival, the shimai-daiko (closing drumbeat) is played as the danjiri are returned to their sheds.

Tips for your visit

Vehicles and danjiri pass along the danjiri routes, so follow traffic restrictions and watch from a safe place.

Yarimawashi is a dangerous maneuver involving speed and centrifugal force. Keep away from the pullers and the danjiri.

During evening processions with illuminated lanterns, watch the lantern light and road conditions, and do not obstruct the direction of travel.

For a safe visit, follow on-the-day guidance on viewing locations and roads open to traffic.

Origins and History of Fukai Danjiri Festival

The origins and founding period of the Fukai Danjiri Festival itself have not been established based on the information that could be confirmed.

One explanation for the place name Fukai is that it comes from the Buddhist priest Gyoki, a prominent monk of the Nara period, who dug a deep well here and improved people's lives.

The danjiri styles and organizing groups have changed over time, and both kamigata and shimogata danjiri have been passed down in Fukai.

Records describe how some towns suspended their processions following an accident in Heisei 10, and how one danjiri was dismantled and permanently retired in Heisei 23.
