An autumn festival in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, featuring a play based on the Benkei legend, community dances, drumming, and a local products market.
About Benkei Festival
The Benkei Festival is a local festival held in Tanabe City, rooted in the legend that Musashibo Benkei was the son of the Kumano betto, who ruled the Tanabe area.
The program combines a variety of events, including the play, the Benkei Geta Dance, Oniwaka Taiko, and the Kishu Benkei Dance.
Across venues in the city, at shrines, and by the sea, stories associated with Benkei and dances involving local residents unfold.

Festival highlights
One highlight is the play “The Legend of Benkei,” performed on a special stage at Tokei Shrine.
Local actors dramatize Benkei’s life, from his birth and meeting with Yoshitsune to the cockfight and his departure at the head of the Kumano navy.
The Benkei Geta Dance parades along the main street to shouted calls, while the yosakoi dance holds preliminary rounds at several venues before the final at Ogi-ga-hama.

Origins and History of Benkei Festival
The Benkei Festival began against the backdrop of a legend that Musashibo Benkei was the son of the Kumano betto, who ruled the Tanabe area.
It began in Showa 62 (1987), when it was held as the “800th Anniversary Festival of Musashibo Benkei and the Kumano Navy’s Departure for War,” following a proposal by the Tanabe City Tourism Vision Implementation Planning Committee.
Over time, theater and yosakoi dancing, among other events, were added, shaping the festival into a community-participation event.
