5 festival floats move through the town of Tenagasuka in Yokkaichi to the sound of gongs and drums. You can see the Ishidori Festival tradition associated with Sumiyoshi Shrine through the town processions and main procession held during Obon.

About Tenagasuka Ishidori Festival

The Tenagasuka Ishidori Festival is held in the Tenagasuka district, in the Tomisuhara area in northern Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture.

5 festival floats ring out with gongs and drums as they process around Tenagasuka Sumiyoshi Shrine.

This summer festival is dedicated to the tutelary deity of the Tenagasuka district and has been passed down by local neighborhood associations and youth groups.

Festival highlights

A highlight is seeing the 5 festival floats from Ten-ichi, Ten-ni, Ten-san, Ten-yon, and Sumiyoshi-cho move forward as gongs and drums ring out.

Each group’s festival float has its own rhythm: Ten-ichi through Ten-yon are said to use the Hon Nanatsu rhythm, while Sumiyoshi-cho uses the Itsutsu rhythm.

At the main procession on August 15, all the floats gather and head to Sumiyoshi Shrine.

Origins and History of Tenagasuka Ishidori Festival

The neri procession held in Tenagasuka during the Meiji era was discontinued toward the end of that era. It is said that the Ishidori Festival began in the early Taisho era because residents felt it would be sad to lose the festival altogether.

It began with the purchase of 1 festival float from Kuwana City, and by the early Showa era there were 5 floats.

The neri procession disappeared in 1958, and today the festival centers on the Ishidori Festival.
