This summer festival brings color to central Tottori City with vibrant umbrella dancing and the sound of jingling bells.
About Tottori Shan Shan Festival
The Tottori Shan Shan Festival is a summer festival held in Tottori City, centered on vibrant umbrella dances.
Based on the “Inaba Umbrella Dance,” passed down in eastern Tottori Prefecture, the choreography was adapted so more people could join in.
The festival’s name comes from the sound of bells attached to the umbrellas and the “shan shan” sound of the waters of Tottori Onsen bubbling up.
The festival continues as a way to enjoy local traditional performing arts in the city center.

Festival highlights
The highlight is watching dancers with colorful umbrellas perform together in the city center.
Each movement of the umbrellas makes the bells ring, filling the streets with sound and dance.
In addition to the umbrella dance, the “Suzukko dance” is also performed at the eve-of-festival events.
In 2026, the program focused on enjoying the dances themselves, without events such as the basic dance contest.

Origins and History of Tottori Shan Shan Festival
The festival’s predecessor was the Tottori Festival, which began in 1961 alongside the annual festivals of Hijiri Shrine and Omori Shrine.
In 1964, a dance to the “Kinanse-bushi” song was created based on the “Inaba Umbrella Dance,” making it easier for more people to take part. The festival began under the name Shan Shan Festival the following year, in 1965.
The umbrella dance traces its roots to rainmaking dances passed down in the Inaba region.
In 2014, the umbrella dance was recognized with a world record.
