Festival highlights
Highlights include Tanabata decorations of various sizes lining the streets, seemingly covering them, and the sight of lanterns lighting up at night.
The oversized Tanabata decorations are given their distinctive flat shape using “kanzashi”—bamboo poles threaded horizontally through them.
Decorations made by neighborhood associations and other groups are entered in the Tanabata decoration contest, where each group competes to see whose display is best.
From evening onward, the colors of the decorations mingle with the glow of the red lanterns, creating a different atmosphere from daytime.

Origins and History of Toide Tanabata Festival
Toide’s Tanabata festival is said to have flourished under the Kaga domain during the Edo period as an event in which people prayed to the stars of Hikoboshi and Orihime for improvement in children’s calligraphy at temple schools.
After the Meiji Restoration, a form closer to today’s festival took shape, with red lanterns and colored strips of paper hung on green bamboo poles and paraded around the neighborhood.
In 1963, the Toide Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized the festival in its present form. It subsequently grew through the cooperation of the town, shopping streets, and local residents.
In 2006, it was selected as one of the “100 Best Cultural Properties of Toyama.”
