A traditional performing art from Tanigumi, Ibigawa Town, in which dancers beat large drums held against their chests and dance while carrying “shinai” shaped like phoenix feathers on their backs. It is performed at events such as the Bumper Harvest Prayer Festival, with powerful dances accompanied by drums, conch shells, and flutes.
About Tanigumi Odori
Tanigumi Odori is a local performing art passed down in Tanigumi, Ibigawa Town, Gifu Prefecture.
In addition to the Bumper Harvest Prayer Festival, it is dedicated and performed at the spring cherry blossom festival and the autumn leaves festival.
A distinctive feature is the sight of dancers carrying “shinai” made from bamboo about 4 meters long and dancing while beating large drums.
In Showa 33, it was designated the first Gifu Prefecture Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
Festival highlights
A highlight is the scene in which 12 dancers hold large drums against their chests and dance in unison, swaying the large “shinai” on their backs.
The shinai are made by splitting bamboo into thin strips, bundling them in a fan shape, and decorating them with cut paper.
In addition to drums, gong drums, conch shells, transverse flutes, clappers, singing, and festival music accompany the dance.
A powerful traditional performing art, bringing together large decorations and a rich variety of sounds.

Origins and History of Tanigumi Odori
Tanigumi Odori is said to have originated as a warrior dance celebrating the Genji clan’s victory over the Heike clan, and is said to have once been called “Kamakura Odori.”
During the Edo period, following a severe drought, it came to be called a rainmaking dance, and later a bumper harvest dance.
It was discontinued sometime after the mid-Taisho period, but a preservation society was formed in 1952, and it was revived in 1953.
Gifu Prefecture states that the founding legend cannot be considered historical fact and describes the dance as a type of dance.
