Festival highlights

Highlights include “Na-nori,” when children in red coats and boatmen tour the neighborhood; “Shimenawa Cutting,” when an old shimenawa is burned and the flames are fanned; and the fire ritual to purify boats.

During Shimenawa Cutting, participants make a fishing-like motion with a bamboo pole, and the height of the flames is associated with a good catch.

Finally, the bamboo pole that remains after the fire is sent out to sea, evoking the community’s connection with the sea.
