Origins and History of Ise Lobster Festival

The Ise-ebi Festival began in 1961.

It started when a procession dance to the Hamajima Ondo, intended to promote tourism, was added to a festival held at Kurosaki Beach to give thanks for Ise-ebi and pray for their repose.

It also embodied hopes for the recovery of Hamajima, which had been devastated by the Isewan Typhoon in 1959 and the Chilean tsunami in 1960.
