The Night Displays of the Nakisato Gion Festival are a traditional event in Tanabe City, where households decorate their eaves with creations made from vegetables, flowers, and other materials for people to view along the streets.

About Night Displays of the Nakisato Gion Festival

The Night Displays of the Nakisato Gion Festival are an eve-of-festival event associated with the Gion Festival handed down in the Nakisato district of Shinjo-cho, Tanabe City.

Each household creates displays inspired by folktales, legends, plants and animals, and current affairs, using familiar materials such as seasonal vegetables and flowers, then decorates its eaves or entrance.

Visitors can walk along the rows of houses, viewing the displays and experiencing the community’s way of life and ingenuity.

Festival highlights

The main attraction is the individual Night Display each household creates with its own distinctive flair.

The displays range from cranes and turtles, and lotus-like creations fashioned from vegetables and other materials, to scenes from Princess Kaguya and Urashima Taro, as well as views of rafting and boating. The variety of combinations of materials and themes is a distinctive feature.

The scene of displays lining the approximately 400-meter row of houses from the shrine approach to Tenno Bridge is also a distinctive feature.

What to expect

Households begin thinking of themes well in advance, then complete their Night Displays on the day using readily available materials.

In the evening, lanterns are lit along the row of houses, and display stands are set out at entrances and beneath the eaves to exhibit the creations.

Visitors can walk along the street to view the displays, while households offer one another critiques of the finished work.

In recent years, creations by children from kindergartens and elementary and junior high schools, as well as displays made jointly by the district, have also been featured.

How to take part

General visitors can enjoy walking around to see the Yomise displays set out under the eaves or at the entrances of individual homes.

Yomise is an event where makers display their works and show them to one another; it is described as a custom in which the works are shown to the general public.

The works are made by individual households and local children. Please check whether general visitors can take part in making them.

Origins and History of Night Displays of the Nakisato Gion Festival

One account of the origins of the Night Displays of the Nakisato Gion Festival says that merchants and artisans in Nakisato arranged items made from their own products and materials outside their shops to coincide with the Gion Shrine festival.

Another account says the tradition evolved from old established families setting up folding screens and displaying family heirlooms, furnishings, and dolls during festivals.

The display area changed with developments such as the opening of National Route 42 in Showa 57, but today the Nakisato Neighborhood Association supports the event’s operation.
