Origins and History of Kambara Festival

Kambara Shrine is regarded as the chief guardian shrine of the Kambara region and is believed to have been founded more than 1,200 years ago.

It is said that the shrine moved to the Nuttari area of Niigata City, where its current buildings stand, in Genroku 3 (around 1690). Its origins are traced to Kanabachiyama in Kambara-tsu, at the mouth of the Agano River.

The otakusen divination began in the Kamakura period and has been passed down to the present as Kambara Shrine’s most important ceremony for around 830 years.
