Niigata Festival is a summer festival in Niigata City that traces its roots to 4 festivals, including the Sumiyoshi Festival. The Sumiyoshi Procession through the city, the river procession across the Shinano River, the citizens’ , the Grand Folk Song Parade, and the fireworks display offer a sense of the port town’s history and local vibrancy.

About Niigata Festival

Niigata Festival is one of Niigata City’s signature summer festivals, formed by combining 4 festivals: the Sumiyoshi Festival, the Commerce and Industry Festival, the River Opening Festival, and the Port Opening Anniversary Festival.

Through the mikoshi and procession of Sumiyoshi Okami, as well as the river procession, hopes for the development of the port town of Niigata and safety at sea are passed down.

A wide variety of events take place across the city and around the Shinano River, from traditional ceremonies to dances involving local residents and fireworks.

Festival highlights

The Sumiyoshi Procession is about 1 kilometer long, running from Hakusan Shrine through Furumachi and across Bandai Bridge, and evokes the history of the port town.

At the fireworks display, starmines and other fireworks are launched from the Shinano River Yasuragi Embankment, bringing the festival to a close.

Origins and History of Niigata Festival

The Sumiyoshi Festival, the centerpiece of Niigata Festival, is said to have begun in 1726 as a festival featuring a procession, following the enshrinement of a sacred object received from Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka during the Edo period.

Later, from the Meiji era onward, the River Opening Festival, Commerce and Industry Festival, and Port Opening Anniversary Festival were added. In 1955, the 4 festivals were combined to create today’s Niigata Festival.

The festival’s timing and format have changed with the times, while continuing to convey the history and hopes of the port town of Niigata.
