A festival to pray for the opening of the mountains in Fuse, Oki, where young people wind mountain vines seven and a half turns around a sacred tree to the accompaniment of kiyari work songs and drums.

About Fuse Mountain Festival

The Fuse Mountain Festival is a prayer ceremony to open the mountains, held every April.

Young people carry mountain vines while singing kiyari work songs, then wind them around the sacred trees at Oyama Shrine in Minamidani and Nakadani and at the sites of Kojin-sama.

Rooted in the mountains and forestry of Fuse, the festival has connected the blessings of the mountains with local life.

Festival highlights

A highlight is the “Obijime” ceremony, performed to the accompaniment of kiyari work songs and drums.

After young men grip the mountain vines and are shaken vigorously back and forth, the vines are wound seven and a half turns around the sacred tree, and a large wand is placed in it.

Rather than a shrine building, a great cedar serves as the object of worship, offering a glimpse of an ancient form of .

What to expect

The day before the festival, participants go into the mountains for “Obikiri” to gather mountain vines and large branches.

On the day of the festival, young people gather at the Kasuga Shrine office and head to Minamidani, led by the person carrying the gohei, while singing kiyari work songs.

They perform Obijime at each festival site, winding the vines seven and a half turns and placing a large gohei wand in them. The same ceremony is held at three sacred sites.

Origins and History of Fuse Mountain Festival

The Fuse Mountain Festival is said to be mentioned in records from the early Edo period, and has been passed down in connection with the mountains and daily life in Fuse.

Oyama Shrine is said to have enshrined Ōyamatsumi in the mid-Edo period, and before the Meiji period, yamabushi of the Hōin sect who had moved to the village held the Oyama festival rites.

Kiyari work songs were once sung at the launching ceremonies of newly built ships and during house construction, but today they are sung at the mountain festival.
