The Fukushima Waraji Festival is one of Fukushima City’s signature summer festivals.

The festival traces its origins to the Shinobu Sanzan Akatsuki Mairi, which has continued since the Edo period. At the summer festival, a giant straw sandal is carried through the city streets.

The giant sandal combines with the other half offered at the Akatsuki Mairi in February to make a pair, symbolizing a prayer for strong legs.

Festival highlights

A highlight is the giant straw sandal parade, in which a 12-meter-long sandal makes its way through the city.

Large groups of musicians, led by flutes and drums, provide live music that drives the festival, alongside the Waraji Odori performed by dancers.

The program also features a variety of events that carry on tradition, including a creative straw sandal parade and competitions using straw sandals.

What to expect

The festival centers on dancing and parades along Shinobu-dori and Ekimae-dori, followed by an offering at Haguro Shrine on the final day.

During the Waraji Odori, dancers hold a “straw ring” as they dance to live music.

Depending on the schedule, events may also include a straw-sandal tug-of-war, a giant straw sandal parade, a creative straw sandal parade, and a finale.

How to take part

The Waraji Dance is described as an event where people of all ages and genders can dance to live music.

However, participation arrangements vary by event, and past notices have included performances that did not allow general participation outside of registered groups.

For 2026, check the details for each performance to see whether individuals or walk-ins can participate.

Origins and History of Fukushima Waraji Festival

The Fukushima Waraji Festival began in 1970 as a summer festival, drawing on the winter religious rite Shinobu Sanzan Akatsuki Mairi, which has continued since the Edo period.

In 2019, the festival was revamped to mark its 50th edition, with changes to its music, dances, and costumes.

Another major change that has shaped the festival as it is today was the shift from recorded music to live performances led by flutes and drums.
