Origins and History of Fukui Phoenix Festival

The Fukui Phoenix Festival originated as the Fukui Festival, which began in Showa 29.

It began as an event to mourn the dead and express gratitude for recovery, likening Fukui City’s revival after disasters such as air raids and earthquakes to the rebirth of a phoenix.

The festival adopted its current name following the 30th-anniversary event in Showa 58. Later, events reflecting the times, such as YOSAKOI Icchorai, were added.
