Origins and History of Toyohama Tai Matsuri

Toyohama Tai Matsuri is said to have begun around 1885 (Meiji 18), when a papier-mâché mouse was made to add excitement to the festival.

After that, the figures changed to various animals and then to sea creatures; by the early Taisho period, they had become papier-mâché sea bream.

Today’s sea bream are made by wrapping white cotton cloth around a wooden or bamboo frame and coloring it red.
