About Tenraiji Bon Odori

Tenraiji Bon Odori has been passed down for generations in the Tenraiji area of Tobata Ward, Kitakyushu City.

The performance style of the Onga River basin, where dancers perform to kouta accompanied by shamisen and taiko, blends with that of the rural areas of the former Kikyu District, where dancers perform to taiko and kudoki songs.

This event reflects the cultural blending unique to Tenraiji, which was located at the border of the region. In Showa 58, it was designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kitakyushu City.

Festival highlights

One highlight is the distinctive arrangement, with the taiko drum at the center of the dance circle and dancers moving to its sound and the songs.

The program includes 4 dances: “Shianbashi,” “Choshi Odori,” “Nanatsu Byoshi,” and “Otsue.” Shianbashi uses kudoki songs, while Choshi Odori and Nanatsu Byoshi use lyrics in the kouta style.

Singing with the taiko as the only instrument is a hallmark of this area’s Bon Odori.
