Tatemono Fireworks, presented as an offering at a festival of Hachiman Shrine in Shinshiro City, are a traditional event in which fireworks set on a wooden frame draw pictures in the night sky. The folded design opens wide with the glow of lanterns and the effects of rockets.
About Tatemono Fireworks
Tatemono Fireworks are mechanized fireworks that create pictures in the sky. They are presented as an offering at the festival of Hachiman Shrine in Hirai, Shinshiro City.
Fireworks are attached to a large wooden frame, and their light brings colorful images to life in the night sky.
They were designated an Intangible Cultural Property of Shinshiro City in Showa 36January 31. The tradition has been passed down by linking local festivals with the art of fireworks.

Festival highlights
The highlight is the sequence in which red lantern light spreads, then the folded fireworks picture opens out to both sides, revealing a vivid design in the night sky.
The wooden frame is about 10m high and 6m wide, with fireworks attached at intervals of about 10cm along the design.
The image created by the mechanized fireworks changes every year. The preservation society has also worked on new designs and mechanisms that reveal the picture in stages.

What to expect
When the torch arrives from Hachiman Shrine, the flame is passed along before the rockets are lit.
Next, the large lantern, hand lanterns, and round lanterns are lit, and 30 round lanterns glow red.
Then a second rocket sets fire to the back panel, unfolding the two folded side panels like opening sleeves and revealing the fireworks image.
After the display, fireworks are also presented as an offering at Hachiman Shrine.

Photo source ·Origins and History of Tatemono Fireworks
Tatemono Fireworks are said to have originated when the lords of the Shinshiro domain, who traveled to Edo as part of the alternate attendance system in the mid-Edo period, saw the Ryogoku River-opening fireworks, brought back the techniques and materials, and presented the display as an offering.
They are said to have once been presented throughout Mikawa, with groups competing in their skills, but few examples remain today.
There is also a story that, during the Meiji period, an invitation to present the display in Nagoya City was declined because transporting the long poles and making arrangements at the site proved difficult.
