About Tango Chirimen Festival
The Tango Chirimen Festival celebrates the culture and craftsmanship of Tango chirimen, set against the textile industry that has supported the Tango region.
The festival brings people together to support the continuation of local industries, encourage ventures into new fields, and promote Japanese clothing.
Tango chirimen began about 300 years ago, when Kin’ya Saheiji of Mineyama brought weaving techniques he had learned in Nishijin back to Tango.
The festival is also designated as a component cultural property of the Japan Heritage site “The Tango Chirimen Corridor: Silk Woven Over 300 Years.”
