For 2026, the first part was scheduled to feature a grand opening star mine and a star mine competition with 9 fireworks companies. The second part featured large-shell star mines and large-scale waterborne star mines.

The sound echoing from the lake, surrounded by mountains on all sides, also contributes to the event’s impressive scale.

What to expect

The event has two parts. In the first, fireworks artists compete with star mines.

In the second part, fireworks that make use of Lake Suwa’s surface are launched, including large-shell star mines and large-scale waterborne star mines.

The 2026 fireworks were scheduled to be launched from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. You can watch them from paid viewing areas at the venue or from locations around the city.

How to take part

General visitors can attend as spectators.

There are no free seating areas, but you can watch the fireworks for free from outside the paid area.

Tickets for the paid area are recommended if you want to relax and watch fireworks over the lake, such as the spectacular waterborne star mines.

To use a paid area, apply for a ticket sold by the Suwa Lake Festival Executive Committee.

For 2026, a lottery sale through the ticket sales site Ticket Pia has been announced.

Children aged 3 and over need a ticket. Children under 3 do not need a ticket only if they watch from an accompanying adult’s lap.

Nearby attractions

Tateishi Park in Suwa City is also recommended as a place to watch the fireworks.

You can see the fireworks from Tateishi Park, but crowds are expected, and traffic restrictions prevent vehicles from traveling in the surrounding area.

It is about a 30–40-minute walk from Kamisuwa Station, so it may be a place to consider watching the fireworks from after walking from the surrounding area.

Origins and History of Suwa Lake Festival Fireworks Display

The event began in 1949 as the “Noryo Suwako Fireworks Display.”

Its name changed to the “Suwako Fireworks Display” in 1950, and the artificial island Hatsushima, used as a fireworks launch platform, was completed in 1954.

Competition star mines and waterborne star mines began in 1961. Since 1992, the event has had two parts: competition fireworks in the first part and star mines in the second.
