Origins and History of Sumiyoshi Matsuri
Sumiyoshi Matsuri is said to have been held regularly in the sixth month as a purification rite as early as the Nara period.
The festival as it is practiced today is passed down as a sequence centered on the Great Purification and annual festival associated with Sumiyoshi Okami, followed by the mikoshi procession and the Aranagi Great Purification at Shukuin Tongu.
The mikoshi procession on foot was revived in 2005.
