Origins and History of Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival

The Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival began in 1970 as the Sendai Tanabata Festival eve celebration, “Boku to Watashi no Omatsuri Hiroba” (“My and Your Festival Square”).

It began as a small-scale display, said to have featured either 50 or about 100 fireworks, and grew as the number of fireworks increased.

The name “Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival” has been used since 1987, and the number of fireworks increased to 16,000 in 2006.
