Origins and History of Ogaki Festival
Ogaki Festival began in 1648, when Ogaki Hachiman Shrine was rebuilt and 10 neighborhoods in the castle town made 10 yama and pulled them through the streets.
In 1679, the feudal lord donated 3 yama, bringing the total to 13.
Some yama were lost in the Nōbi earthquake and wartime fires, but restoration and reconstruction progressed, and all 13 were brought together in 2012.
It was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 2015 and inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016.
