About Miyada Gion Festival

The Miyada Gion Festival is a summer festival in Miyada Village, Nagano Prefecture, that has continued since the Edo period.

Centered on the festival rites at Tsushima Shrine, the event features mikoshi processions, religious ceremonies, Miyada Taiko, dancing, and fireworks.

It is known as a distinctive festival in which children’s and adults’ mikoshi parade through town, culminating in their destruction at night.

It is said that placing a fragment of the mikoshi on your roof brings blessings for good health and prosperous business.

Festival highlights

The main highlight is the destruction of the mikoshi: at night, it is thrown down the stone steps in the grounds of Tsushima Shrine repeatedly until only its central pillar remains.

The adults’ mikoshi is also called the “Abare Mikoshi” (“rampaging mikoshi”), and reaches a dramatic climax after parading through the neighborhood.

The Gion-bayashi and children’s mikoshi are active from daytime, followed by Miyada Taiko, Awa Odori, Soran, and fireworks from the evening onward.
