Origins and History of Kumatori Danjiri Festival
It is unclear when danjiri first began to be pulled in Kumatori, but records show that in 1841 (Tenpo 12), 8 villages—Gomon, Ogaito, Miyamura, Okubo, Kotani, Nanayama, Wada, and Asashiro—owned danjiri.
Many of the danjiri in use today were built between the Meiji and Taisho periods, and are carved with scenes from works such as Naniwa Senki, -ki, and Chushingura.
