Kumagaya hayashi enlivens the festival, centered on the mikoshi procession and events featuring dashi and yatai from 12 neighborhoods parading through the city.
The name is said to come from the custom of shops and others handing out uchiwa fans, and the festival is closely connected with the local streetscape.

Festival highlights
The highlight is seeing dashi and yatai parade through the city while playing Kumagaya hayashi.
During “taikiai,” several dashi and yatai face one another and compete with their hayashi music, accompanied by the sound of large gongs about 30 centimeters in diameter.
Major moments in the festival include the first taikiai, when 12 floats gather, and the final-day hikiai taikiai.

What to expect
The festival begins with the mikoshi procession: the mikoshi departs from Yasaka Shrine, travels through the city, and heads to the temporary shrine.
Since then, dashi and yatai from each neighborhood have paraded through their respective areas and along National Route 17, with performances by competing hayashi bands at places such as the station square.
On the final day, a hikiai taikiai and the transfer of the year’s festival responsibilities take place at Omatsuri Square, and the festival concludes when the mikoshi returns to Yasaka Shrine.

Origins and History of Kumagaya Uchiwa Festival
The Kumagaya summer festival is said to have begun when a request was granted in 1750 to unite festivals that had previously been held separately at various temples and shrines into a single festival for the local community.
It became established as a mikoshi festival during the Edo period, and the purchase of a dashi in Meiji 24 helped spur the development of dashi and yatai processions.
The distribution of shibu uchiwa fans in place of sekihan spread, leading to the festival’s present name.
