As the autumn grand festivals of Daimon Shrine and Biwase Shrine, 4 hikiyama make their way through the Daimon area of Imizu City. Highlights include the hanayama by day, the -yama at night, and the bridge crossing at Daimon Ohashi Bridge over the Shogawa River.

About Daimon Hikiyama Festival

The Daimon Hikiyama Festival is the autumn grand festival of Daimon Shrine and Biwase Shrine, held in the Daimon area of Imizu City, Toyama Prefecture.

The 4 hikiyama from Tamachi, Nakamachi, Nishimachi, and Biwase make their way through the neighborhoods, transforming from hanayama decorated with flower umbrellas by day into chochin-yama at night.

The procession crossing Daimon Ohashi Bridge to travel between both banks of the Shogawa River is a defining feature that connects the community and its festival.

Festival highlights

A daytime highlight is the “bridge crossing,” when 4 hikiyama adorned with flower umbrellas cross Daimon Ohashi Bridge.

On the outbound crossing, 3 floats from the Daimon Shrine side cross the bridge, join up with Biwase on the opposite bank, and then return across the bridge as 4 floats.

At night, the hikiyama adorned with lanterns slowly make their way through the neighborhoods, creating a different look and atmosphere from the daytime.

What to expect

During the festival, the hikiyama from each neighborhood set out from Daimon Shrine, cross the Shogawa River, join up with Biwase, and then make their way through the Daimon area.

By day, the floats proceed as hanayama; from evening onward, they are adorned with lanterns and continue as a nighttime procession.

According to the 2026 schedule, the day begins with children pulling the floats in the morning, followed by the daytime hanayama procession and the nighttime chochin-yama procession.

How to take part

The hikiyama are pulled by people connected with the neighborhoods of Tamachi, Nakamachi, Nishimachi, and Biwase.

The 4 hikiyama are pulled through the streets by young men from each neighborhood.

The festival is presented as an event to enjoy primarily by watching.

Visitors can watch the hikiyama throughout the neighborhoods of the Daimon area, as well as around Daimon Shrine and Daimon Ohashi Bridge.

The floats transform from flower-decorated hanayama by day into lantern-covered chochin-yama at night, offering different sights at different times.

Origins and History of Daimon Hikiyama Festival

According to local tradition, the Daimon Hikiyama Festival dates back to the early Meiji period.

It is said that the floats were built in the style of the Takaoka Mikurumayama, in hopes of the town’s development. The festival was originally held with 5 floats from Kawaramachi, Biwase, Nishimachi, Nakamachi, and Tamachi.

Changes to the town and the composition of the hikiyama, including expansion work on the left bank of the Shogawa River, have left 4 floats in the tradition today.

Official information

Information on the date, venue, transportation, and parking is available on the Daimon Hikiyama Festival special page on Imizu City’s official tourism website.

A phone number for the Imizu Tourism Association is also listed for inquiries.
