About Toyama Festival

Toyama Festival is an autumn event held in the heart of Toyama City, centered around Toyama Castle Ruins Park and Jōshi Ōdōri.

It brings together dance, music, and competitions, including performances, the Etchū Owara-bushi National Competition, and a corporate tug-of-war tournament.

There are also activities for families with children, vehicle displays, and food stalls, so you can enjoy watching, eating, and taking part all at once.

One of its highlights is the chance to enjoy the festival while visiting multiple venues around the city center.

Festival highlights

One of the main highlights is the “Toyama Yosakoi Festival,” featuring teams from inside and outside the prefecture.

The performances continue with colorful costumes, music and choreography unique to each team, parades along Jōshi Ōdōri, and dances on special stages.

At the Etchū Owara-bushi National Competition, singers from across Japan compete in expressive performance.

The Hoshizora Bazaar, with food and sweets, and activities for families with children are also part of the fun.

What to expect

At the venues, there are yosakoi parades and stage performances, the Etchū Owara-bushi National Competition, and performances and skits by the police band.

The Kids’ Park offers activities for families, including a giant air dome, baseball experiences, tree climbing, and bubble shows, with different activities on each day.

Along Jōshi Ōdōri, visitors can also see vehicle displays and try riding in vehicles, as well as watch the Wakadako-kai perform kiyari work songs and ladder climbing.

You can also enjoy a stamp rally that takes you around food and festival-game stalls.

How to take part

Some festival events are primarily for spectators, but activities that visitors can take part in are also offered.

The stamp rally is for children in elementary school or younger and their parents or family members; adults may also participate on their own.

The Kids’ Park offers activities for everyone from children to adults.

Events such as the tug-of-war tournament and yosakoi have limited participant numbers, so general visitors can mainly enjoy cheering on the participants and watching.

To take part in the stamp rally, pick up a stamp sheet at the east plaza of Toyama Castle Ruins Park, then visit the vendor tents at the east plaza of Hoshizora Bazaar.

Collect stamps by trying activities such as quizzes, and receive prizes such as dagashi sweets, balloons, or handheld fans depending on how many stamps you collect.

It runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days and ends when the stamp sheets or prizes run out.

This information does not specify how general visitors can apply to participate as performers in yosakoi, tug-of-war, concerts, or similar events.
