The Shogawa Kanko Festival is a local celebration that brings the Shogawa area to life with Yotaka Andon lantern processions, clashes between the large lanterns, fireworks, and torch processions.

About Shogawa Kanko Festival

The Shogawa Kanko Festival is a local festival held every year on the first Saturday and Sunday of June in the Shogawa area of Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture.

Yotaka Andon lantern processions, fireworks, torch processions, and more take place throughout Shogawa.

Clashes between the Yotaka Andon lanterns are another major highlight, and a variety of events turn central Shogawa into the festival grounds.

Festival highlights

The Yotaka Andon lanterns that illuminate Shogawa at night do more than parade through town: they compete for beauty in a contest, culminating in clashes between the large lanterns.

In 2026, a total of 20 lanterns will take part: 9 large, 10 medium, and 1 small.

A fireworks display of 1,500 shots is also planned near Funatobashi Bridge, offering a chance to enjoy the lanterns and fireworks together.

What to expect

The first day features a yamame trout-catching event, a torch procession, the lighting ceremony for the sacred lanterns, the Shogawa Gorge Fireworks Display, and Yotaka Andon lantern processions through town.

After the Yotaka Andon Contest, the large lanterns clash. On the second day, enjoy performances, the Shogawa Ondo dance, and lantern processions through town.

The festival concludes with a closing hand-clapping ceremony.

How to take part

No general participation requirements for the festival as a whole have been announced, but in 2026 visitors can take part in the yamame trout release-and-catch event.

The fee is ¥500 per person, and preschoolers must be accompanied by a guardian.

Yotaka lantern floats and dance performances are held as events organized by local districts and groups.

The yamame trout release-and-catch event takes place from 3 p.m. upstream of the former Ipponbashi Bridge on the Niman-goku Irrigation Canal.

You must catch the fish with your hands; using a net or bucket to catch them is prohibited.

Preschoolers must participate with a guardian, and the fee is ¥1,000 including the guardian.

Origins and History of Shogawa Kanko Festival

The Shogawa Kanko Festival began in 1953 as the Shogawa Town Kanko Festival, commemorating the first anniversary of the merger of 4 neighboring villages in 1952 to form Shogawa Town.

Yotaka Andon lanterns were made before the war, but the tradition died out during wartime and was revived at the festival in 1953.

The tradition later died out again, then was revived once more in 1973 and has been passed down to the present day.
