Origins and History of Nanao Port Festival

Nanao Port Festival originated in 1940 (Showa 15), when it was held mainly on July 20, the anniversary of the city’s incorporation, to commemorate Nanao’s municipal incorporation the previous year.

The following year, in 1941, it was established as the Nanao City Festival.

It is said that the festival date continued to coincide with the city’s anniversary even after Marine Day was established. In 2004, following the formation of Nanao City under the new municipal system, the festival date was changed to the day before or 2 days before Marine Day.

The festival was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the spread of infectious disease, and in 2022 it was held over 1 day instead of its usual duration.
