The Nakayama Shrine Festival Warrior Procession is a traditional event held in the Matsumine and Yamadera areas of Sakata City in conjunction with the annual festival at Nakayama Shrine. A procession wearing armor and helmets parades through the castle town.

About Nakayama Shrine Festival Warrior Procession

The Nakayama Shrine Festival Warrior Procession is a festival held in the Matsumine and Yamadera areas of Sakata City in conjunction with the annual festival at Nakayama Shrine.

Nakayama Shrine was founded by the Sakai clan of Matsuyama Domain to enshrine Matsudaira Saburo Nobuyasu, the eldest son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Sakai Tadatsugu, the clan's founding lord.

Around 100 people clad in traditional armor and helmets parade through the castle town, an event closely tied to the area's history.

The festival was once said to be held with the prestige of a 100,000-koku domain, and it is said that the shogunate dispatched an inspector.

Festival highlights

The main highlight is the moment the armored warriors pass in front of the main gate at the ruins of Matsuyama Castle.

The procession sets out from Nakayama Shrine, passes through the main gate, continues along the castle town streets including Uchimachi, Nakamachi, and Minamimachi, then returns to the shrine.

It is described as covering about 4 km in total, and the traditional costumes and procession winding through town evoke the domain era.

The Matsuyama Domain Ogino-ryu Artillery Demonstration is also listed as a related event, but it is separate from the warrior procession.
