What to expect

At the venue, you can watch performances, browse food stalls and markets, and take part in workshops and play areas for children.

A major feature of the festival is that people can do more than attend events: they can get involved as executive committee members or participants in an organization, helping with preparations, production, venue setup, operations on the day, and cleanup.

The film festival screens independently made films, and the award-winning works are selected by audience vote.

How to take part

General visitors can enjoy the stages, film festival, market, food, play areas, and workshops.

A defining feature of the Nakanoshima Festival is that citizens are both participants and creators of its events; visitors can also get involved in running it through the executive committee or participating organizations.

The 2026 event information describes activities for a wide range of ages, from children to adults.

Visitors can attend the various events held throughout Nakanoshima Park during the festival.

Origins and History of Nakanoshima Festival

The Nakanoshima Festival grew out of a citizens’ movement to protect Nakanoshima’s historic buildings and scenery.

The Nakanoshima Preservation Association was formed in 1972, bringing citizens together on Nakanoshima and inspiring the idea of a festival that would make use of the area.

The first festival was held on May 5, 1973. From the 4th festival in 1975, holding the event on May 3, 4, and 5 and using an executive committee system became established practices.

Over time, the festival incorporated music, theater, activities, markets, and environmental programs, growing into a comprehensive celebration of citizens’ culture.
