Origins and History of Mamekarasan Festival

Inari Shrine is said to have been moved to its current location in Kanbun 2 (1662).

Its predecessor was a Shugendo training temple of the Honzan-ha school under the Kyoto Shogoin school, and it is also mentioned in the Fudoki Goyō Kakidashi of An'ei 3 (1774).

It later became a village shrine in 1879 and was designated a shrine receiving offerings in 1911.

The festival’s name comes from a legend that visitors trampled the fields during the bean harvest season.
