Origins and History of Konomono Festival

The area around Kayazu Shrine is said to have once faced the sea. People offered vegetables and seaweed salt before the deity and prayed for abundant harvests.

The story goes that vegetables combined with salt became pleasantly pickled, marking the beginning of pickles in Japan.

The Konomono Festival has been passed down as a ritual in which pickles are offered to Atsuta Jingu, and it was designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Ama City in 1985.
