The festival traces its roots to the Kanazawa City Festival, held from Taisho 12 to coincide with the Fūkokusai at Oyama Shrine.

For 6 years after the war, the festival continued as the Oyama Festival, beginning in Showa 21. In Showa 27, the Commerce and Industry Festival, organized mainly by Kanazawa City and the Kanazawa Chamber of Commerce and Industry, became the first festival in its current format.

In Showa 59, an actor was cast as Toshiie in the Hyakumangoku Procession for the first time, and the parade developed into the grand procession seen today.
