The Iwaki Tanabata Festival is one of Iwaki’s signature summer Tanabata celebrations, held mainly in the Taira shopping streets by Iwaki Station.

The shopping association, local groups, and others line the streets with bamboo decorations of their own design, while colorful streamers brighten the town.

In 2019, its name was changed from “Taira Tanabata Festival” to its current name, and it was positioned as a festival for the entire city.

You can stroll while admiring the Tanabata decorations, and enjoy events such as dancing and music.

Festival highlights

The highlight is the colorful bamboo decorations that seem to cover the central streets of Taira.

Streamers and elaborately crafted ornaments hang overhead, offering a close-up view as you walk along the streets.

Traditional performances, music festivals, Bon Odori, and other events are also held during the festival, which concludes with the “Iwaki Odori.”

In 2026, around 300 street stalls will line the route, bringing decorations and events together for a lively downtown festival.
