Origins and History of Itabashi Fireworks Festival
Records show that a large fireworks display was held at the Itabashi-Hirao residence of the Maeda family in 1833, during the Edo period, in the 4th year of the Tempo era.
The current event began as the Toda Bridge Fireworks Festival, held to mark Itabashi’s incorporation into Tokyo in 1950. It became a joint event hosted by Itabashi and the former town of Toda in 1952.
The event has been known as the Toda Bridge Fireworks Festival, the Residents’ Summer Fireworks Festival and the Itabashi Fireworks Festival, before taking its current name in 1988.
