About Hachigatsu Odori
Hachigatsu Odori is a traditional dance held in the lunar calendar: August in the Amami Islands and elsewhere.
On Amami Ōshima, it has been passed down as an event in which new rice is offered to pray for an abundant harvest and express gratitude for the harvest.
The customary form is to dance in a circle in an open space in the settlement, accompanied by drums and singing.
In Amami City, it is presented on the streets of Naze as part of the Amami Festival.

Festival highlights
A highlight is seeing men and women form a circle and sing responsively while dancing to the lively drum rhythms of the chijin.
As the dance progresses, the tempo quickens toward a spirited climax known as Arashage.
The sound of the hato and “Hana,” performed with distinctive melodic phrases, are also characteristic.
At the Amami Festival, you can enjoy the evening dances on several streets in Naze.
