About Esan Azalea Festival
The Esan Azalea Festival is a spring festival where visitors can enjoy flowers such as Ezo mountain azaleas in the foothills of Mount Esan, an active volcano at the eastern edge of Hakodate.
Centered around Esan Azalea Park, around 600,000 azaleas, as they are often said to number, and sarasa dōdan color the mountain slopes.
The scenery formed by rugged volcanic rock, flowers, and the Tsugaru Strait is a unique attraction of this area.
Festival highlights
Highlights include Ezo mountain azaleas that turn Mount Esan’s slopes crimson, and sarasa dōdan, which bears clusters of flowers.
From the observation platform, you can take in sweeping views of the blue Tsugaru Strait, fresh greenery, and red azaleas.
During the festival, there are also Tsugaru shamisen and Soran performances, so you can enjoy music and dance as well as the flowers.
